Your Questions About Small Hot Tubs And Spas

Thomas asks…

Can you recommend an outdoor hot tub/spa for under 2k that is decent?

I noticed sam's club has a couple, one for around $1600, member's mark brand. Anyone have positive/negative experiences with any brand/model for 2K or under? I want one just to relax, I don't need 200 jets and a pop up TV...just something small and simple and cheap.

The Sage answers:

Hey there,

Great idea on getting a hot tub. I use ours almost everyday.

For under 2K you will probably be limited to a portable hot tub which many people like. These tubs are easy to put up and use right away. If you get a permanent hot tub then you will have to pay for the installation of electrical hook up which can run anywhere from $1000 - $2000. There is a good article for you to look at below and a good website that you will find useful to help you decide.

Just remember one thing. If you go too cheap, then you often get a pretty cheap tub in many ways including quality. I wanted to get one in the price range you were looking but in the end we bought a used tub which had been returned to the manufacturer and repaired. We got it for about half the retail price just because it was used for a few months. They fixed it and resold it to us and we are extremely happy with it. We spent around $4000 plus installation. Well worth the extra cost.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Robert asks…

Hot tub dermatitis/spa dermatitis, help, please!?

Since Sept I have had an off and on small rashy spots all over my body but mostly on the soft skin inside thighs, under arms and between breasts. I'm medium olive skinned and not prone to skin problems. We have had our spa for about 18 months and the problem started in Sept. We immediately checked the water ourselves and had it checked professionally as well. It was recommended that we change from a Chlorine system to Bromine. The rash cleared almost immediately. Now here we are almost 4 months later, rash is back. Again we made the recommended change and added an ionic filter to our bromine system, I'm still unable to use the spa. Now another change, was recommended and we added a mineral block to the filter, it's supposed to help maintain water softness. At each change, the spa has been drained and cleaned. The source water has been tested and so has the spa water it always test "A-OK" on everything. AND the rash is getting more persistent and harder to get rid of.
I have been to the doc. His suggestion was stay out of the tub until it clears up. But it comes back the next time I go in and I do shower after each session.
I know what to do about myself, I have a RX.

What do I do about my spa that I can't use?

The Sage answers:

Wow. I'm sorry. I'd go to the doctor and see if there's a cream or something that you can put on it. My sister has dermatomyositis. It's a rash we barely noticed, but her muscles have been deteriorating at the same time. You've only talked about professionals related to the spa, so I'd go to a doctor, because it's gotten more persistent.

Daniel asks…

Small in-ground pool or swim spa?

I have a small backyard, but my family really wants a pool. Well, we're divided: half want a pool (even a small one) and half want a hot tub. In any case, if we get a pool I want an inground one (so one of those inflatable pools is not an option for us--I hate the look and my town is cracking down on fences for them), with a graduated bottom (so little kids can get in safely). But then again, a hot tub is nice too. We can't afford or make space for both.

So I looked at so-called Swim Spas. I like their sizes, easy installation, and that they can be disassembled if we move. But they all seem to have flat bottoms and be really designed more for exercise. We're looking for family fun and relaxation.

Any suggestions? Do other options exist? I'd love to hear from others who have installed either small pools or swim spas. Thanks!

The Sage answers:

You answered your own question. A Swim spa is for exercise not lounging about in the summer pool. Some do have a hot tub end. You can always think about the future and that someone might decide they like swiming and put a Baud jet/Speck pump (That's the leading brand for swim spas) in a wall of your pool so you can get some good exercise out of it. Now you do have the best of both worlds.

Laura asks…

Spa question (hot tub)?

My spa was delivered with 3 inch wood frame on the underside (like a small pedestal). Is this normal? I would have expected it to be flat so when you place it on cement it is evenly distributed.

I have a call placed into technical support but it could take 3 days to find out and Im dying ot know.

thanks in advance.

The Sage answers:

Yes. Mine is covered with a plastic cover though

Your Questions About Small Hot Tubs Bathroom

Michael asks…

I have recurring dreams about many sinks and hot tubs. ??????

I have dreams a few times per week where my kitchen has 19 sinks placed here and there and my bathroom has one shower and 3 or 4 bath tubs. In the backyard there is a small dirty pool and 4 or 5 hot tubs.
This is always a house I'm looking to buy or a house a member of my family lives in. If the house belongs to my family, they are not there and I seem to be house-sitting.

What do these mean????????

The Sage answers:

The cleansing of old feelings, and a new attitude, as symbolised by the contrast between an older house, and a newer one, as the house is the self, or the personality. The bathroom conceals our private thoughts and actions. Dirty water - repressed emotions? The yard or garden symbolises our inner being.

Something, back, or behind, could be the past, or repressed feelings.

Note the presence of a kitchen, in the dream, which in myth and folktale, is often associated with transformation.

House sitting suggests a temporary form of abode. Your family shaped you, perhaps you are breaking away from the mould, and becoming more individual.

Sandy asks…

How much would i have to earn every year if i wanted a custom built house?

and i wanted:
At least three bedrooms,
a jacuzzi/hot tub, power shower and nice small bath in my bathrooms (jacuzzi/hot tub and power shower in one and bath in another)
Maybe (but not bothered about) a swimming pool,
nice big kitchen,
and about 5 reception rooms (including halls) on two/three stories.

The Sage answers:

I understand that when people are ready to purchase a home, that they should purchase one that is no more than twice the amount of their annual income. Custom anything can have a price tag at least double that of regular-constructed items. Count on it costing no less than $900,000 to $1,000,000; so you will need to be earning at least $500,000 per year or about $49,000 per month. Be prepared for your ideas to change as you get older and realize the realities of the cost of living. It is great to dream, though.

Joseph asks…

why is my hot water pressure sooo low?

my hot water in my tub is extremely low... its like a small stream almost a constant drip... but the cold water shoots out fine... the hot water in the other places works just fine the kitchen and bathroom sink hot water works fine its just the tub... whats the problem?
how much does it cost to fix it?

The Sage answers:

There are rubber washers and seals in the faucets for the tub behind the nobs you turn. Shut off the water and remove and inspect the rubber seals and seats. Maybe the hot water one came off and is plugging up the line. If you can't do that, you'll need a plumber to do it for you. Good luck.

William asks…

Can I create a cheap but effective solar hot water heater for bathing using my south-facing bathroom window?

I moved into an older brick bungalow recently. We have just one bathroom, with a south-facing window (original glass) that's about 2-1/2' wide by 3-1/2'. The window is above the toilet, which sits right next to the soaking tub. I've never attempted to construct anything more complex than a small cardboard box solar cooker, and I don't have much to spend on this project. But I'd like to try and construct a simple, insulated collector/holding tank in the window, which can extend beyond the window area itself in all directions only a couple of feet. But I do also have a wide linen closet on the other side of the toliet that has extra space for storage, if needed. I just want to heat enough water for daily bathing for a family of three. It could be as rudimentary as something I fill with water from a hose, and then have a way for it to flow down into the tub once heated. Any ideas, or is this something I need a more high-tech solution or more space for?

The Sage answers:

Buy a 2 panel solar thermal system and be done with it. You get tax credits and a much more efficient system (95%). Go to appalachianenergy.com. We have 60 systems ready to ship as i type.

Nancy asks…

what temperature water should you run to keep pipes from bursting?

I have an older home, and were we are its extremely cold. I have water running in the kitchen sink, tub and bathroom sink, I always thought you would just run cold water? Then i heard some guy say hot water? does it matter? Also the kitchen, bathroom are on the south side of the house, so i didnt know if i need water running at all faucets, i have small water running, I also have the cupboards open where the pipe runs to the kitchen to help air flow? my main concern was does the temperature of the water matter? i noticed i have no hot water in the bathroom sink, but i have cold water, i have hot water in the tub, so not sure whats going on there?
i forgot to say, i have no basement

The Sage answers:

First off the thought was that running water does not freeze as easily as still water. Water will still freeze if it is cold enough-even in the creeks.
Secondly, why they are saying hot water is that in plumbing, the hot and cold pipe could be(not always) are running close together and hot water(which comes heated from the tank) will impart the heat in the same cavity as the cold water(if that pipe is there). That is the thought. It does drain your tank which has to keep reheating more and more water.
The difference between the bathroom sink and the tub would be in the plumbing(or that the hot water to the sink has frozen.

What to do. Having the cupboard open to room temp is the right thing to do. Check in the basement (how cold it is) and for exposed pipes. Those pipes will be that cold.

Pay attention. If the pipes are on the outer walls of the house - where the insulation is suppose to be THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM. It has its butt in the frost 24/7(just like a refridgerator).
Modern homes (the 50's on at least) have the plumbing on the inside walls or no closer that6" to the inside of the outer(insulated) wall. And the water tank is in the middle of the home.

You have to expose the pipes from the inside walls and get the room air to contact them. Also you need glass or syrofoam insulation behind them. Hope none have already broken(which means you would have to tear the wall apart anyways). Do a retrofit in the spring.

Now I know you are asking, why was it built this way? Maybe cause initially they had a well? And pipes were added later for running water.

Party With Small Hot Tubs

That's right, you can have a great party even with small hot tubs as Jenna and her friends show you in this short YouTube video below. Unsurprisingly, the sound when they're in the tub isn't great but you can still here what they're saying. The scene takes place in the snow so I hope they've got their shoes ready once they've finished otherwise their toes might fall off.

Jenna and I had a few friends over for a small Hot tub get together (: haha hot tubs are the best in the winter!!! and if you look at the pictures you can some pictures of us jumping into the snow!

Looks like they had a good time and so can you, even with small hot tubs. Right now, you can still get a very good deal but make sure you shop around.

Your Questions About Small Hot Tubs

My backyard is small, should i build my own small spa hot tubs, will it fit 2 people?

yes or no

The Sage answers:

Yes, it would be great if you really want one. But it really is up to the city you live; they have rules you have to follow and they have restrictions on a lot of things. If your backyard is small, there could be a problem with your boundaries, usually there are such things like you have to have at least 4 feet inside your property line, but that depends on your city. Give them a quick call before you do anything.

Thomas asks…

How much should I open the bromine floater in my small hot tub?

I have a small 2-3 seater , roughly 700 gallons hot tub that I just put in and filled. All my chemicals tested okay except the chlorine. I am going to fill up the bromine floater and put it in the hot tub but how much do I open it? How long will it take to chlorinate the hot tub so we can go in?

The Sage answers:

Start out with the lowest setting and then check it with a tester every couple hours to see the change increase or decrease it slightly if not the correct levels. Be sure to drain it at least once or twice a month to clean and refresh the water. You can get away with just draining half way down if its not to dirty. Good Luck!

Lizzie asks…

What is the most expensive Small Hot tub?

Im not asking about a 19 foot mega hot tub, but a 4-7 person one. NOT BUILD BY AN INDIVIDUAL, BUT A COMPANY! What is the most expensive one? What kinds have the televisions and gaming consoles in them? what is the most reliable and expensive brands? What accesories can one have built into a hot tub? any other good questions you can think of, write em below! Thanks!!!

The Sage answers:

I dont know, but I SERIOUSLY HATE HOT TUBS. KEEP THEM CLEAN, BECAUSE I KNOW PEOPLE WHO HAD DIED FROM IT AND HAD TO GET THEIR HANDS AND LEGS CUT OFF BECAUSE OF GERMS FROM THE BACTRIA IN THE HOT TUB. But just clean it out everytime you're finished with it. :)

Charles asks…

How to repair small leaks in a fiberglass Jaccuzzi hot tub?

The shell of my "older" (pre-1995) Jaccuzzi hot tub has several small areas that have developed leaks. Basically, the shell has just "worn through." I'm pretty certain the tub's made of fiberglass. How do I repair these leaking spots? ..... and have them water tight again of course?! THANKS!

The Sage answers:

Sand the places that need repair. You have to do this so the patch will stick.

Get a "Bondo" automotive fiberglass repair kit and use that to patch the holes.

The patches will need to be finished by sanding and filling with a mix of the fibreglass resin and "microballoons... Or "Bondo Ultimate" to get a smooth surface.

The patches will be visible... Unless you go through with completely refinishing the interior of the hot tub. But at least they'll quit leaking.

Paul asks…

how much chemicals do i put in small hot tub?

The Sage answers:

You can buy a test kit for less than $10. Then follow the instructions. When we had a hot tub it was around half a cup after initial filling. Then let it run awhile and retest to see if you need more.

It was the Romans who pioneered the use of hot baths for both social and health reasons but until relatively recently; the medical profession had not given it their seal of approval. Designed to comfortably sit 4 people, this spa contains a built in pump to save space and features 128 air jets to soothe your muscles.
