As with all mechanical devices, certain parts will eventually wear
out. With hot tubs and spas, the pump is one of those parts. We have put together a range of selected offers
with full descriptions to guide you in your quest.
Questions About The Hot Tub Pumps Not Working
Lisa asks…
How do I test my ozonater on my hot tub to see if it's working and how would I repalce
it?
I just got the tub up and running but can't tell if the ozonator works or not. I'm
thinking of just going ahead and buying a replacement and need instructions on installing the thing myself.
I'd like to test it first but don't have a clue how? It's over thirteen years old. I've replaced the
pump.
The Sage answers:
The majority of ozone units will have a little glow plug on the side of the box which
shows if the ozone lamp is on/working. It will look like a little purple light.
If it's thirteen years old it will either be blown, or worn out and not making as much ozone as it used to.
I personally wouldn't bother replacing it - ozone doesn't do a good enough job keeping a spa bacteria free without
using the same chemicals that you need to use without ozone.
Maria asks…
Hot tub jets not working?
Hi, we recently bought a used hot tub, i believe its a leisure bay model. We finally
got it moved here, everything works but the jets. We know they worked when we first went to look at the hot
tub, the hot tub had been empty a while of course so we could move it, we fill it up and turn it on and
nothing. The blower works fine, not sure if that's connected to the same pump or not. I also read about air
locks, it would make sense , since its been recently refilled , but we cant find the nut or valve that will
let it bleed out. Any other steps we can take or any advice would be appreciated
The Sage answers:
Try running your water hose to the intake for your pump and force water through
it.
Susan asks…
I moved my hot tub and 1 of the three motors are not pushing any water out of the
jets, the pump is working?
The Sage answers:
Smokey is right that the pump may not be primed. The first thing you need to do is
locate that pump that is not working. So remove the panels for it. Next turn the pump on. Is it running? If
so start looking on the front end of the pump for a little knob, or screw or peacock valve. Open that up to
let water drip out. Be very careful to not open it all the way where it will shoot out due to the high water
pressure. If the pump is not working then I want you to trace the wire from the pump to the pack. Next turn
the breaker off to the hot tub. Unplug that pumps wire and plug it into one of the other pumps. Turn the
breaker back on and see if the pump starts. If it does you have an issue with the connection on the spa pack
or possible a bad board. If it doesn't start you most likely have a bad capacitor on the pump. Locate and
replace it. If that doesn't work you will have to take it to a motor repair shop.
Sharon asks…
Hot tub pump not pumping water or heating?
I have a 1994 Cal Spa 8 foot Lounger. Recently the jets stopped working and it stopped
heating. The pump and the heater are one component. I am assuming since the pump is not circulating the water
it can't heat and circulate the water either. The pump/heater are running, I checked the fan inside the pump
and that is working too. Any thoughts on why it is not pumping the water through? If something is clogged how
do I unclog it? Thanks,
The blower is seperate from the pump/heater. They operate from two different controls too. The blower is working
perfect. If that piece you mentioned is broken what am I looking at for cost?
The pump/heater is only 1 year old. The main pump is what is running, just not circulating any water
The Sage answers:
When you say the fan are you really talking abut the blower or the main spa's pump? If
the pump is in fact turning and no water at all is flowing (there's always a little even if there is some
major obstruction) then you do need to open up the wet end of the pump and see what is happening. I would bet
ther "wet" end of the pump would show the impeller damaged. That is an older tub and I bet your pump is not
working and your actually hearing the blower. No heat can happen if there is no water flow. Feel free to send
us digital photos, or post them here.
HMMM.. Look to see if there are any "gate" valves on each line and make sure they are
up and open to allow water flow. As far as your pump is concerned. It sounds like you have a problem in the
"wet end", Your going to need to take it apart and see if something is broken(impeller) or stuck, or
something is caught in it. Parts can run anywhere from 18-44 for a new one. 12-22 for a new shaft seal if
needed. One hour of labor. I would make an attempt first to do it since there's not much to it. Feel free to
contact us directly and I can work you through it.
THE PUMP SHOULD BE UNDER WARRANTY!!!!
Mandy asks…
Why is the GFCI on my hot tub tripping when I turn on the blower?
It's a Nu Wave spa pack. The pump works fine, light too. However when I turn the
blower on it runs for a split second then trips the GFCI, but not the breaker. I plugged the blower in to a
power supply, it runs fine. I changed the air switch too.
The Sage answers:
Sounds to me that either your blower is failing and drawing too many amps causing an
excessive amp draw therefore tripping your GFCI. The other probability is that your GFCI is too small for the
spa. Most companies only warranty the blower for 1 year. They are notorious to fail. I replace one every 2
days.
But then again if I am selling a service as it appears others are..then go with that
answer and be prepared to pay...lol. I have got to say...I cannot remember when a blower has been in anything
but a plastic housing. Being 40 I have a long memory. Just to make sure Mr. Spa Fixer...do realize this
person said when they turn the Blower on.... Not the heater which we all know that actually work on these
things that the heater relay already tripped and therefore is working drawing whatever the amps are and not
tripping the GFCI.. OOOPS!! DOH!!!!! Go find a new avenue to make money as in your local market where your
prices are way too high hence these people are looking online to begin with.

Your Questions About Hot Tub Pumps Not Working
How come my Hot Tub Jets are not working?
I just moved into a new home with a hot tub in the backyard; yesterday I decided to
use it for the first time but the jets were not working.
I doubled checked to make sure the spa pump was on, and I also pressed the button that
motors on the jets but nothing worked.
Does anybody have any solutions?
The Sage answers:
When that happened to me it was because one of the pumps had burnt out and needed to
be replaced - cost about $400 to have it replaced IIRC. If you're lucky it might just be a loose wire or some
other minor electrical issue. No matter what it is, it's probably best to call a professional to look at it
rather than trying to figure it out yourself.
Steven asks…
What is wrong with my hot tub?
I know how my hot tub works, but this is baffling my mind, my pump is working, both
speeds, but will not circulate any water in my hot tub, i checked for air lock, and its all working, any
comments would help. Its a waterway executive 4.0 hp pump.
the propeller moves properly and I can see the shaft spinning when it is turned on
The Sage answers:
The motor is locked or bent. Try replacing it
Mary asks…
Hot tub pump causes the GFCI to trip, any ideal why?
We have a hot tub. 220v Hardwired into a gfci. Once I overfilled it and it tripped the
circuit and I had to use fans and such to dry out everything down in the 'guts' of the system, took about two
days. Its 'tripped' its self at least 3 times in two years, but each time the kids were splashing and I
figured it was just water causing it. Wait a hour or two and it would reset. This week I cleaned and refilled
the tub. Now the pump was working fine until I tripped the breaker so I could refill it. I was very careful
not to overfill this time, but when I turned it on, it tripped the breaker over and over. I let it 'dry' even
though it was not wet for three days again. Still tripped as soon as I turned the breaker on. Now keep in
mind, the pump will not come on for about 30 seconds after you restore power, but it tripped any way. I went
and started unhooking each circuit on the system, Starting with the pump. As soon as I unhooked the pump, the
circuit stayed hot. Just to see if the pump had locked up, I removed the gfci and wired it straight up,
turned on the power, and everything came right on. I know that dangerous. I waited about an hour, let it run,
then put the gfci back in and turned it back on, everything worked fine.
Any ideal why this would be doing this?
The Sage answers:
You mention 220v so I assume you are not in a area which feeds 110v
normally.
I see the following scenarios:
1. The pump is overloading the circuit therefore causing the GFCI to trip. I.e. The pump is drawing more power than
the gfci or wiring is designed for..
2. The wiring that feeds the pump is of a lower rating causing the gfci to
trip
3. There is a short circuit within the pump causing the gfci to trip.
4. Defective GFCI
If you have the resources to do the following:
- Check the current ratings on the pump & GFCI
- Check the voltage between Nuetral & earth (ground) if present this may be your issue ... There is a leakage
causing the GFCI to trip
Alternatives?
- Replace GFCI (this would be the easiest/cheapest I believe)
- Replace Motor
-Replace Wiring
Hope this helped!

Hot Tub not working?
I have this hot tub that froze and busted a lot of the lines going to the jets. I
replaced all these and turned the power back on with one of the gates still in the closed position. Not usre
if I damaged the pump or what but I can't get it to do anything but blow fuses. The readout says it's
overheating. I took the motor cover off and spinned the porpelers and they turned good. Also the heat senor
has melted out of the inline water heater and was wondering if these are replaceable. THis unit has two pumps
and it is a fourwinds model 700 maverick......Thanks for any help
The Sage answers:
I think Four Winds use balboa spa equipment. The sensors are either sold as a combo
with the Temp sensor and hi limit or separately. Makes sure the power is off when you change them. The pump
would not get damaged from a closed gate valve. To trace the GFCI tripping or blowing fuses. Start by
unplugging each of the pumps/components until you find the one that is causing the trouble. I do bet f you
replace the high limit sensor your fuse blowing will stop. Whew...! There's a lot of to tell you. Feel free
to call us toll free and I can work it through with you on the phone Sunday afternoon. 1-888-atkippy. Your
using the SC-30 fuses right? "OH" will go away as soon as you replace the sensor. Off the top of my head I
would say the senor will cost 32-40 dollars. The blown fuses are coming from too much amp draw. This has got
me very curious. Do inspect all your wires thoroughly to make sure there are no exposed wires and also do
look at your fuse holder for burnt marks. I am betting you might have a value 2000 system and the fuse holder
is charred. A faulty wiring condition exsists so please use extreme caution.
Sharon asks…
Hot tub GFI breaker trips?
Helping a friend with his hot tub. Worked fine for a couple of years, then GFI starts
tripping. Found the heater tube melted and shorted and he replaced it. He also replaced the GFI breaker. GFI
continues to trip immediately.
With power leads lifted and taped at hot tub, energized GFI and it holds in (does not
trip).
Reconnected power leads at hot tub and temporarily bypassing GFI results in everything
working. Put GFI back in circuit.
Started unplugging things from mother board to isolate problem as follows:
Took both pumps out of circuit (unplugged from mother board) and GFI trips
immediately.
Took the user interface controller (control panel on top of tub for turning pumps and
lights on/off, setting temperature) out of circuit,
GFI still trips immediately. Also took ozonator out of circuit with same results. Took new heater assembly out of
circuit. Don't see any other loads external to the mother board to take out of circuit to isolate
problem.
With all external loads unplugged from motherboard, lifted one of the two 240 volt
power wires and GFI tripped. Reconnected that power lead and lifted the second power lead and GFI held in
(did not trip).
Mother board is $300 and non-returnable, so I'm a little scared to recommend he buys a
new one without knowing for sure it is the problem.
Any advice?
The Sage answers:
Most of your board manufactures will look at and repair your board for $125.00 to
$150.00. UNLESS there is water damage to it. The board does need to be replaced by the way. What brand of tub
and spa pack is it?

The secondary pumps for our hot tub just
emit big bubbles constantly, instead of working normally. Any tips?
The
secondarypumps for ourhottub just emit big bubbles constantly, instead of working
normally. The primarypumps work, but weakly. I’ve
tried cleaning the key filters that I could find (including on the floor of thehottub), filling up both of the
filter bucket areas and the O-ring and the main pressurized tank with water until it just
overflowed, and nothing seems to have any effect.
Any other tips for
what might be causing the secondarypumps to not work at all and just
blow bubbles, and for the primarypumps to be so weak (and how to
fix it)?
Thanks!
Used Hot Tubs Store answers:
My guess would be that you need to replace the
primary pump motor; doesn’t sound like you are building any air pressure.
I would look up the manufacturers specifications
online and see if there is a frequently asked questions or troubleshooting area for this problem and
or pose the problem to them. They should also have or link you to the correct part without having to
jerk around with a repairman who will do the exact same thing for an hourly rate.

Hot tub pumps not
working?
I just drained
myhottub to clean it. It was
working fine before now the pump is not functioning either on high or low speeds. i felt the pump
it isnt gettinghot or showing any signs of trying to work. I have power to thetub. Lights
and controls both work. I can hear the air switches functioning correctly. what else could be the
problem? can a pump just go out with no signs or warning?
Used Hot Tubs Store answers:
Is
the air line tubing still properly connected to the air switch and the motor? Is the power still on? You NEVER ran the unit “dry” (without water)?

How much does a hot tub pump seal usually
cost?
I have had a leak
in myhottub for a while and finally
traced it to the pump seal. How much do they usualy cost? Is it just a single seal or is it a
“multi staged” seal? Is it easy to replace?

Susan asks…
Why is there smoke coming from my Hot Tub
Pump??
We are having
trouble with ourHotTub, It was here when we moved in
and needed a Heater so we got that and just got it installed and now when we turn it on the after
about 10 seconds now the pump is statring to smoke so we turned it off what is going on, why is
it smoking?
Used Hot Tubs Store answers:
Most likely the windings in the motor are bad.
If you know how to remove the motor it could be either rewound or replaced. Depending on how long it
has been since being run there could be rust on the shaft causing it to seize.

I have a Saratoga Spa hot tub that all of a

Bothpumps when the
buttons are pushed seem to be running ,but I’m not getting any of the jets to work.We live in the North
East and its been really cold, but the water temp is somewhere around 100, so I’m pretty sure its not
frozen. It’s just very odd that bothpumps aren’t working at the same

HEATFLO HEAT TRANSFER SYSTEM, ULTRA JET…
can anyone help us and tell us what we need to get this going?
a motor and pump?
we do not have a lot of money so were looking for a used one…any assistance would be appreciated!
thank you
Usedhottubsstore answers:
Hello, Your heat exchanger/pump is most likely in a Cal Spa Hot Tub. There are a few
smaller manufactures that used them but Cal used them the most. The good news is they are not that
expensive! Like the very proud electrician with the grudge on his shoulder said you don’t want to really
get into replacing parts without knowing for sure they are broke because they will add up quickly in labor
and finding out you have to replace yet something else in the pump or motor that you could have gotten a
new one in the end. Most common is for the seal to leak and the motor’s shaft to corrode to where you have
to cut off the impeller inside the wet end of the pump. Whn this happens the shaft wobbles causing the
impeller to catch on the pump’s housing which in turn kills the motor from increase drag and friction. You
first need to text your start capacitor on the motor. It could be as simple as replacing a $10 part. Be
very careful when handling a Cap. Since they can store very large amounts of electricity and can even kill
you. Know what it is and how to test this before you touch it.
If you have to get a new one what’s very important is to match up your pumps amp draw and voltage and
hp. It would be great if you could email me and then send me a few digital photos of everything under your
tub and I can spend a few minutes from looking at the photos identifying what you have. All of this work
can easily be done by yourself. No need to hire someone. Worse case you might need to make a five minute
long distance call.
Carol asks…
Are hot tub motor shaft threads all the same?
I need to know if I buy a new pump for my hottub
if the threading from my old motor will match the new pump.
Usedhottubsstore answers:
I doubt they are all the same. Just get your threads and shaft size specs correct
before you buy it.
Chris asks…
What would happen if you connected a 110 electrical line to a 220 line for a hot tub motor?
I think I accidentally did this. I took the word of the previous owner that it was a 110
hottub.
The light for the hottub and the temp gauge came on but nothing worked . The
motor/pump seemed to be struggling to kick on so i mmediately turned in off.
is it just less power or did i fry it?
Also, any way to convert it?
Usedhottubsstore answers:
You probably didn’t fry it if it was for a short time. Low voltage can burn up your
motor. No, you cannot convert your motor. Replace the motor with a 110v motor or run 220v to your motor.
(I’ve never heard of a 220v motor)

Donald asks…
where can i get a good used pump an motor for a hot tub?
i need a 115 volt 1hp spa pump and motor ,anybody know where i can get a good used
one cheap,it is 1.5 inch hook ups line is on the top
Usedhottubsstore answers:
It would be cheaper I would think to have the motor replaced and pump resealed. You
might call a local electric shop that deals in motors sales and service. You might have to take to them to
see if they can rebuild it. Thats the way I would go first.

Hot Tub Pumps are shown below using one of our selected
video range to help you visualize what it looks like and more importantly how to change it. Fortunately it's
a great DIY project and doesn't require any specialist skills or training. The whole process can usually be
completed in half an hour. Remember to turn the power off first. Next you need the right tools, locate the
pump, remove the screwa, take off the cabinet followed by the insulation. Unplug the spa motor, locate and
close the spa shut off valves. Loosen and remove the 4 nuts at the base of the motor. Pull the motor free
from the base and remove the cord. Remove the vibration pad and replace if required. Install new gaskett but
don't overtighten. Secure motor to the base and then open shutoff valves again. Plug motor into spa system
and then replace all that you have removed. Seems pretty simple but the video will certainly
help.
