Your Questions About Hot Tub Covers

Any hot tub covers better then others?

I know they are, I am just looking for positive/negative buying experiences. Have to order one this week, live in TN. The tub is outside, no roof over it. Please share your buying hints with me. I appreciate it. Patricia TN.

The Sage answers:

Hello, Shipping is a killer. Since your right next door I would recomend a company in Hayesville nc named Spa & Boat covers. Their number is 828 389-3336. Go with their 2# density foam. I have ordered several from them and have been happy.

Thomas asks…

What is the best way to restore/treate a weathered hot tub cover?

The cover on our hot tub is about five years old and is moderately weathered.

By "weathered" I mean the brown color has faded in some spots and the top itself is more coarse to the touch than when it was new.

I treated it with some Armor All leather product about a year ago but it didn't work as well or for as long as I had hoped.

Looking for recommendations for a better way ..

I'm giving the tub a major pre cold weather going-over this week.

Thanks in advance for your answer.

The Sage answers:

Just like anything wearing away from the sun, rain, or other weather elements, its too late to get it back to perfect condition. But, you can make it look better by rubbing on a wax or solution, similar to the stuff that you put on car interiors. If the hot tub cover is leather, plastic, vinyl or the like, you can use any polish that deals with that, even the car ones. You can find it at any store you buy products like that i.e. Target. And, when trying to restore like you said you already tried, you may need to apply the Armor All at least once a month not just once a year.

Michael asks…

Can a hot tub cover that's been split in half be repaired?

I'm looking into buying a hot tub but the one I like has a cover that has split down the middle (where it would fold in half). Just wondering if there's a way to repair it without having to buy a brand new cover.

The Sage answers:

I don't know what your cover is made out of. I'll take a guess and say it is either plastic or plywood with a vinyl cover over both halves.

Go to the fabric store and buy a strip of vinyl about 18 inches wide and long enough to go from side to side. Clean off the existing surface and glue the new piece on. Center it over the split so it looks uniform. Use contact cement and glue it while it's in the folded position.

Ruth asks…

How do you re-build a hot tub cover?

My hot tub cover was destroyed by a storm and I don't have the 380.00 bucks to replace it. How would I go about building one?

The Sage answers:

Build a framework then fasten a cover over it.
The easiest for you to make on a budget might be to construct a framework using 1 1/2" diameter PVC plastic pipe and fittings. It's light-weight yet sturdy, easy to cut and fit together and will never rust, rot or splinter. If you're not familiar with it, a trip to Lowe's or Home Depot and a quick how-to lesson from one of their people and you'll see how easy it is to work with.
You cut the pipe to length with a hack saw, select the appropriate angle fittings (90, 45 or 22 degree) and glue the pipe and fittings together to form the proper shape for your tub.
After the frame is built you fasten your selected cover material to it. You can use simple plastic tarp material, rubberized canvas or whatever your budget allows. Stretch the material over the frame, wrapping it around the the pipe almost a complete revolution then fastening it to the pipe using something like 1/2" long #8 self-tapping pan-head screws placed about 8" apart. That will make a decent, light-weight cover that should last a long time.
If you have a few more bucks to spend you can make a cover using pressure-treated pine lumber ( 2"x2"x8' boards for the frame and 1/2" thick plywood for the cover material.). It will be much heavier but will take more abuse than a fabric cover.
If that isn't enough detail to help you, shoot me an e-mail.

Your Questions About Jacuzzi Hot Tub Covers

Helen asks…

Jacuzzi whirlpool hot tubs.................?

I have a Jacuzzi whirlpool hot tub from 1993. It had one leak in it and we fixed it. It's in our deck so you can't even tell how old it is. The only thing is that over the years, when we put the cover on, it broke off all the buttons. So, instead of buying a new hot tub since this one is in good shape, I was wondering if any of these buttons could replace the ones on there already:

http://www.clearcreekspas.com/topsides.html

The Sage answers:

Confused. How could they be on there if they are broken off?

Robert asks…

Singles/Dating (ladies only) Survey? Would you...?

1. play a musical instrument in a band?
2. have an intimate bubble bath with tons of bubbles?
3. cuddle up with your boyfriend?
4. watch movies? What kind: action, comedy, or both?
5. tell blonde jokes?
6. tell redneck jokes?
7. eat at a nice restaurant?
8. play a trick on your boyfriend while he's asleep?
9. get in a jacuzzi or hot tub (w/ warm water) on the first date?
10. let your boyfriend shower in order to get out of having a bubble bath?

If you wanted to get in a jacuzzi tub, would you...

1. pour a whole bottle of dish soap into the tub before filling up the water?
2. use warm water instead of hot water?
3. splash the soap around while the water is filling up (creating more bubbles)?
4. run the jets full blast the entire time while in the romantic bubble bath (creating infinite amounts of additional bubbles)?
5. wear a white (and at the same time non-transparent) bathing suit in the bubble bath?
6. cuddle your boyfriend with all the bubbles?
7. wash his hair or let him wash your hair?
8. let the water out (without rinsing the bubbles out of the tub), pour another bottle of dish soap (one that's twice as sudsy) in there, then run more warm water, and turn the jets back on?
9. cover your boyfriend in as much bubbles as possible, so he will get in and stay in?
10. pull him back in if he got out too soon?

Jenny asks…

white flakes are coming through some faucets.?

It was enough to completely clog the filter in the kitchen faucet.

I have read about dip tube problems, which would be consistent with the age of the house, but these flakes crumble/dissolve which doesn't seem consistent with plastc. In addition, I have a 75 gallon hot water tank and the hot water gets cool before the jets are covered on the jacuzzi tub. Have lived int eh house since 5/07 with no other problems.

The Sage answers:

Sounds like lime build up. You need a filter all incoming water.

Donald asks…

Can my landlord make me pay for electricity HE uses?

I live in a duplex in NY. My landlord lives in the 3 bedroom upstairs apartment and my husband, son and I live in the 2br downstairs. When I got my last 2 electric bills I noticed they were about $65 dollars more than usual and I didn't know why. Then I realized that lately with the weather being nicer my LL has plugged in his hot tub jacuzzi thing in the backyard, and has opened up and turned on the pool lights, heater, pumps etc. He also has been having outdoor lights, radio and a number of other electricity guzzling recreation items on many days and nights on the back patio where he and his family and sometimes their guests hang out. My family is not permitted to use the back patio or jacuzzi area and have yet to be given permission to use the pool. (We have to ask if we can use it first and he always says no.)
Anyway, I went up and explained about my electricity being higher than normal and asked if it was possible that the outside electricity may be connected to my account. He said that it is most definitely not connected to my apt. So, my husband had a friend of his come over that works as an electrician for a modular homes company. He checked out our box and said that one of the breaker switches was for outside and that we were indeed paying for all the electric luxuries out back that we are not allowed to use and that my LL is either a moron or a liar. The friend flipped a switch in the box and said that now the outside electricity wont work unless the switch is flipped back the other way which will force my LL to admit I'm paying the electric to get turned back on.
It took 1 night for the LL to come knocking on my door. He flipped the switch in my box and turned the elec back on outside. I told him that I do not wish to paying for electricity that I am not using. He said "So what do you want me to do? Rewire the whole house? Or do you just not want me to use my own backyard?" I told him I would be happy if he would just lower my rent from $700 to $650 to cover the difference, and I would like a credit to my rent for $100 for the last 2 months that I have paid for his electricity usage. He basically just laughed in my face. Is there anything I can do? I would rather not move as we are very settled in here and it is close to both my son's school and husbands work. Thanks for any useful, friendly advice.

The Sage answers:

You are under NO obligation to pay for utilities used by anyone else.

1. Have a licensed electrician come in and pull the breaker from the panel and tie back the wiring for that circuit.

2. Flip the breaker and deny the landlord access to YOUR unit without advance notice. When he comes in and flips it, turn it off as soon as he leaves. Force him to give another 24 or 48 hour notice to re-enter the unit. Lather, rinse, and repeat until he gets the message.

3. Consider filing a criminal complaint for theft of YOUR utilities by the landlord.

I thought that the hot tub covers title was catchy and rhymed too. Back to the important bit. I too am guilty of buying something, skimming through the manual, putting the warranty somewhere safe and then forgetting where it is and then when there’s a problem, blaming everybody else for moving it. Sound familiar?

Workmanship and manufacturer defects should be contained in the guarantee conditions inside the replacement hot tub covers. The best distributors often offer …

http://articlesprite.com/business/essential-reminder-when-purchasing-a-replacement-hot-tub-cover

It’s called frustration which is why I urge you to keep the warranty for any of the hot tub covers you purchase so that when it all goes wrong, you have some comeback and hopefully save yourself a packet.

If you have recently purchased a hot tub or spa, hopefully you will also have received one of the many designs of hot tub covers as part of the package. In todays current economic climate, saving fuel is a necessity for most people and as with a swimming pool, there is no better way to save on your heating bills than by insulating the warmth.

These days, hot tub covers are user friendly making them light but effective. They also come in a range of styles and colors to suit all tastes at a price you can afford. If you are concerned about people using the tub whilst you are out at work for example or that children may fall in by accident then don't be. You can buy hot tub covers with locks for peace of mind. We hope you found this free info guide useful.

Hot tub covers can also be made by yourself if you are a DIY enthusiast. Below we have chosen some video footage to show you how it can be done. This particular demonstration uses cedar covers which  is an ideal wood that allows you to enjoy the outdorrs whilst protecting you from the ultra violet rays of the sun. This is a gazebo hot tub cover with glass using western red cedar and a privacy screen. The project requires two posts that have been stained with uv protectant and prefinished with a mildew inhibitor to help preserve it. They have been prenotched to fit into the footings.

Western red cedar is quite lightweight making it easier for one man to lift the posts. Using hot dipped galvanised bolts, he secures the posts, one on each corner and then continues to the same width cross posts that have also been pre-notched. Make sure you watch the complete video before attempting this kind of structure.

Want to build my own hot tub cover lift, Does anyone have any idea how to do so?

8 person- approx. 8′x8′- I have seen one built with pvc pipe, but that was quite awhile ago seemed to work good, but can’t remember how it was built.

Usedhottubsstore answers:

You might get some ideas from these sites that sells Rock-It hot tub cover lifts for $120 and $180,

Sandy asks…

has anyone made a hot tub cover lift?

Usedhottubsstore answers:

I constructed one for a customer that had a heavy redwood cover once many years ago; we used a counter weight and a cable that was spring loaded it took many hours to get the proper balance. If you have a traditional Naugahyde cover i would purchase a Cover Butler from your local Spa shop.

Susan asks…

My hot tub cover smells when I lift it off. It’s a newer cover,so is there anything I can do or clean it with?

I am new at this hot tub & pool thing, and I can use all the help or answers I can get! The chemicals in the water are fine, just about ideal, but just not sure what to do about that cover! Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

Usedhottubsstore answers:

Just soap and water,
its the curring agent in the vinyl
it will get better with time

Michael asks…

How do i know if my hot tub cover is bad?

I was told I will know when my hot tub  cover is bad because I won’t be able to lift it anymore. I can still lift it without any problem as it’s not heavy at all but water drains out of it on the sides and sometimes into the tub when I lift it up. Is it bad or is this normal?

Usedhottubsstore answers:

There is nothing abnormal with the condensation on the bottom of the cover to drip in the hot tub when you lift it. If you have water coming out of the side of the cover you my have a developing problem with the cover. Until it gets water logged or softer than normal on the exterior surface it’s still doing it’s job.

Sandra asks…

Will grass that has been blocked by the sun grow back naturally?

There has been a hot tub cover laying in my backyard for atleast a month now and i have finally got the urge to clean it off and sell it since we do not have a hot tub anymore so we no longer need the cover. When i lifted up the hot tub cover to hose it down the grass underneath was completely gone and the dirt has TONS of bugs all over. I was wondering whether the grass will grow back naturally now that the sun is not being blocked and nothing is resting on it or whether i have to go out and replant grass, which would be very difficult for me because i have very playful dogs and a small backyard so it will be difficult to keep them away from the straw while the grass is growing.

Usedhottubsstore answers:

Grass will grow back after a few days of being deprived of light if there’s any green left, but it sounds as though you’ll have to replant, sorry. If you sow seed, cover it with straw, and then cover the whole thing with fine mesh fencing, your dogs can run over it, but won’t be able to dig in it. Hope this helps…
