Just like a swimming pool, hot tub cleaning is essential to keep the water looking clear and
healthy. below you will find some helpful hints and tips to guide you when to clean, how often and more
importantly, how to clean.
Your Questions About Hot Tub Cleaning
Ruth asks…
Did I do a good enough job of cleaning my hot tub?
I left the water in my hot tub all summer long. Surprisingly, the water looked all
right and there was very minimal dirt on the tub after I drained the water out. I cleaned the shell with some
anti-bacterial 409, refilled the water and hit it with some chlorine. My ph is always right on out of the tap
and I've never really had any foaming problems, nor do I now. Is it good to go or will I run into problems
later?
The Sage answers:
You did a good job cleaning the tub the steps you took were correct . One thing you
did not mention was the filter. You should remove the filter and wash it with a garden hose. If the filter
still looks dirty you should a filter cleaning aid . The filter cleaning aid I have used and works very well
is filter blaster. If the filter still looks bad it will not work as efficient as it should and it should be
replaced. You can find replacement filters at poolsupplysales.com
David asks…
How do you remove hard water deposits from a hot tub when cleaning it?
The Sage answers:
YEA, VINEGAR, CLR, OR LIME-A-WAY
Chris asks…
Have you ever had your hot tub cleaned professionally?
The boyfriend and I are about to rent a house that comes with a hot tub that we are
keen on using, but it needs to be cleaned. Our future landlords said they would provide us with the chemicals
to maintain it, but that's where they left us.
Do you know of anyone professionally that cleans hot tubs in the
Atlanta area? I aint doin' it...
Thanks.
The Sage answers:
I own a swimming pool company in Wilmington, NC and I can give you a basic idea
of what to expect.
For an initial cleaning, expect to pay $75/hour for cleanup through a professional
company. This generally takes 2-3 hours depending on how big and dirty the tub is.
If you're not ready to learn how to balance the chemistry in your spa, expect to pay
about $75-100 a month for spa maintenance.
I recommend purchasing a Taylor test kit for testing your chemicals (not
strips).
Look at the K-1004 kit.

Donald asks…
What chemical(s) or cleaning agent(s) work best when cleaning the tub portion of a hot
tub?
I figure there isn't much I can't or shouldn't use seeing as the thing is routinely
filled with chlorinated water.
Just curious if anyone has recommendations for better-than-the-other cleaners
..
Thanks.
The tub color is white and not especially dirty to begin with. The tub has not been
used for 2-3 years but was covered most of that time.
The Sage answers:
Hay, If you have not tried a soap scum remover for bathtubs, you may want to try that!
The works is pretty good, or check with Lowe's or Home Depot for one! Also the Dollar General Store sell
Awesome, and it is Awesome! Hope this helps for You!

Your Questions About Hot Tub Cleaning Bleach
Can I use bleach to clean the water in my hot tub?
I am out of chlorine and due to the long weekend won't be able to get
some until next week. Testing strips say I need to add chlorine and the water is noticeably dirty. Can I use a
chlorine bleach as a temporary substitute?
The Sage answers:
Interesting answers. The most common chlorine is sodium hypochlorite in
powder form and you will find that many bleaches are made from sodium hyplochlorite. If you check the active
ingredient on the bleach bottle and contains only this chemical then you can use it. First check the
concentration of the active ingredient as normal pool chlorine is around 65% active and bleach would probably be
less as it is diluted. Chlorine anyway is highly caustic with a pH of around 11. If you do use it leave the pump
off and the bleach/chlorine will dissipate over time any way. I used to work in a swimmimg pool shop.
Jenny asks…
How do I get rid of a stain-ring on the vinyl lining of my hot tub. I've
tried bleach and acid toilet cleaner
Maybe I can just paint over it using a Vinyl Paint spray, such as you
would use to repaint a car's dashboard (it's much the same, like a leather texture). The concern is that the
paint would peel or bubble, being under (hot) water. Someone out there must've done this before. Rejuvenating
this thing would be great. Thanks, Mike.
The Sage answers:
Try Bam or oxy clean but don't use thing1and thing2 they only make
worse.
Paul asks…
what would bleach or ammonia do to a hot tub?
someone might have poured ammonia in my hot tub or maybe over the amount
of bleach in my hot tub because it smells like a really strong odor or or cleaning thing
The Sage answers:
Mixing bleach with ammonia forms toxic fumes. Do not breathe in the
fumes. Let it dissipate for several days.
Steven asks…
How much bleach to use on hot tub?
We just got a new house and people have told us that the way to clean a
hottub/whirlpool bath with jets is to run water with bleach through them. Ever done this? How much for how
long?
The Sage answers:
Use distilled white wine vinegar as the first answered. It will also
help clean off the calcium from the pipes along with the other horrible things. It is preferred to use Calcium
Hypocrite granular chlorine. 3 oz for 200 gal. Run for one hour no more and then drain.

Your Questions About Hot Tub Cleaning Supplies
While I am not a step parent yet. My fiancee has two boys 23 and 28. The older son
lives at home and works whenever he has it. Pays rent/utilities most of the time. The situation is this son
feels the house belongs to him. He feels that his father owes him since the son pays rent. He never cleans,
rarely mows the lawn (large lawn). The sons' feelings are that the house is his childhood home therefore he
is entitled to ownership. Never mind he does not pay for food, general house cleaning pool/hot tub supplies
maintenance, but uses it and entertains with his friends at the house. Any suggestions for his father and
I???
The Sage answers:
Kick the fucktard out. It's still your house, who pays the mortage. Plus, I don't know
why he still lives there, I mean, if he has enough money to move out and pay rent to someone else, why
doesn't he?! I could understand if he's saving up like my brother, but doesn't he want privacy and
independence? I thought that's what young people's ultimate goals were.
Jenny asks…
Ruining a Tub full of Hot watter to do Laundry to save electricity could this save the
energy crisis ?
BY HAND WASHING YOUR CLOSE IN THE TUB WITH OXI CLEAN MY CLOTHS SMELT GREAT AND SAVED 8
DOLLARS AND DID MY LAUNDRY IN HALF THE TIME WILL THIS IMPROVE OUR WATTER SUPPLY AND SAVE US
MILLIONS
The Sage answers:
Saved $8? How? Water doesn't cost much, and the electricity for the washer and the gas
or electricity for the dryer wouldn't cost a total of $8 for a load. However, even saving a dollar or 2 or 3
will add up, over time.
Because of the Law of Conservation of Energy, you spent -x- number of BTUs to heat
that water; a gas water heater is more efficient than electricity, but 1 way or the other, you still used a
certain amount of energy and the overall difference was probably minimal.
Now, if you REALLY want to save energy (not necessarily your own physical energy,
though, which also uses calories - from food- to produce your own body's personal energy), you could collect
rain water in a barrel, like they do in many parts of the world, especially the rainy tropics and place that
barrel so that it can be warmed by the sun.
Then you can use your Oxy-Clean to wash your clothes and then hang them on a rope in
the sun to dry them. They dry a but stiffer than in a dryer, but they have that fresh sun-shiny smell that
just can't be beat.
Or, according to another answer, shower with your solar-heated rain water while you're
wearing those clothes, that way YOU get clean AND the clothes get clean. Just don't let the neighbors see you
wearing your wife's bra and undies and try to claim that "Oh, I was just washing them, for
gosh-sakes..."
After the clothes are washed and rinsed clean, be sure to let the wash-water be
collected in a 'downstream' collection system; that is what is known as "grey water" and is used in many
countries to water their gardens, wash their sidewalks, etc. In other words, the soapy rinse water may not be
potable (drinkable) but still can be used, not just drained away. Get it? Got it? Good!!!
Don't the naysayers and jokesters (and me) deter you from trying to lessen your carbon
footprint; it's a worthy goal and the effort starts with each one of us.
Seriously: thank you for being a good citizen. Just imagine how much water and
fuel-energy we could save if more people did what you are doing. It's commendable. And don't let anyone stop
you: even if you're the ONLY one doing (but you're not alone, bro, lots of people are coming around to your
way of thinking), YOU know that YOU are doing the RIGHT THING.
(I'm sure that you meant:
r-u-n-n-i-n-g instead of ruining
w-a-t-e-r instead of watter
-and-
c-l-o-t-h-e-s instead of cloths)
.
Ken asks…
Can someone check my paragraph? and help come up with a concluding
sentence?
When cleaning the house most people put off cleaning the bathroom, I personally think
there it’s the easiest part of cleaning house. I usually pick a time when im home alone so I have no
distractions or people needing to come in while I’m in the middle of cleaning. I start by getting all my
cleaning supplies in the bathroom (Bleach, Windex, Comet, Paper Towels and Gloves.) First I start the water
in the bathtub and while it gets hot I stop the drain. While the tub is filling I put my gloves on. I start
my cleaning at the sink, After spraying the bleach on the counter I sprinkle the comet inside the sink. While
letting the comet sit a couple of minutes to get all the tough residue I begin scrubbing the counter top. I
then rinse the rag and comet inside the sink. My focus in now on the toilet, I sprinkle the comet inside the
rim of the toilet then I begin to clean the bowl with my scrub brush. I then take a cup of bleach and pour it
into the scotching water. Drenching my mop with the hot water and bleach I start at the door working my way
back to the bathtub. While the floor is drying I drain the dirty water from the tub and sprinkle comet
inside. I scrub until all the residue is gone then I rinse with hot water. Making my way back to the sink I
spray Windex onto the mirror. Making sure there are no streaks I wipe it off using a couple of paper towels.
After all my cleaning is done I take off my gloves to rinse them with hot water. I then return my cleaning
supplies to the cabinet under the sink.
The Sage answers:
In the end, my way of cleaning works great and gets the job done.
That should work.
Thomas asks…
english majors i need ur help?
can u look over my paper for errors.
Maintaining a clean house is very important. When a house is clean, not only does it
look better, the inhabitants feel better as well. Reducing clutter, dirt and debris allows a more safe
environment for people to live in. Cleaning a home is easy. All that is needed is the right supplies, enough
time and a good attitude.
The first thing one needs to do is assemble the right supplies. Supplies should be in
accordance with what needs to be cleaned. For example, if the windows need cleaning there should be rags and
a glass cleaning agent. After collecting supplies, map out a course of action. Decide which room needs to be
cleaned first.. The best room to clean first is usually the kitchen. This is for fatigue purposes. Nobody
wants to scrub dishes after cleaning every room in their home. Start with the dishes. Use hot water but be
sure not to use water that is hot enough to scold. After finishing the dishes, wipe down all of the surfaces.
After finishing the countertops, sweep the floor. If the floor needs extra attention, it may be wise to mop
it. Remember to give the wet floor ample time to dry. This will eliminate blemishes and smudges. Give the
kitchen one last look over and move to the next room.
After cleaning the kitchen, one should clean the bedroom. Start off by making the bed.
If the bedding appears to be dirty, be sure to change it. Next, put away any stray articles of clothing. If
the bedroom has carpeting it would be wise to vacuum the floor. This will help get rid of dust and other
debris. Be sure to wipe down surfaces such as the window and the television screen. Finally, one should
deodorize the room by spraying some sort of air freshener.
After finishing the bedroom, move on to the bathroom. The bathroom needs more
attention than other areas. This is because of the bodily functions that go on in this vicinity. There are
more germs there so more attention should be paid to this area. Start off by cleaning the tub. Be sure to use
some type of antibacterial agent that will get rid of germs. Next, clean the toilet. Use a toilet brush to
get deep inside the toilet and scrub the perimeter of the bowl. Sweep the floor in the bathroom and replace
the towels with fresh ones. Take a clean towel and wipe down the mirrors. Place all toiletries in a discreet
place, preferably under the sink. Look the bathroom over for any imperfections, once it looks totally clean,
move on to the living room.
Cleaning the living room mostly consists of dusting and shining surfaces. Pay close
attention to the television screen and the tables. Rearrange pillows and if necessary, organize the magazine
rack. If there is carpeting, vacuum the floor. Once the living room is complete, you are finished.
The appearance of one’s home is often seen as a reflection of the owner. There is no
way to be sure when someone will visit your house so it should always be clean. Cleanliness also provides a
safe environment because it virtually eliminates tripping on objects that are out of place. Cleaning may not
be one’s favorite thing to do but it is necessary and very important.

water temperature for health and normal showers and to clean dishes etc.?
we all know that the boiling point of water is 212 degrees! I tested the water
temperture where I reside as a tenent and the temperature was 82 degrees. How can that be safe to rinse and
clean the dishes, pots etc? I can take a shower with out turning the cold water on!?! I have turned the
water
heater that supplies the apartment's to a level of 100 degrees! I think still that is not hot enough to clean or
steralize dishes. The lady directly above has two young children, and says the water is to hot for them to take to
take a bath or shower!?! I myself would not leave children in a bath tub alone at any time!!! Kids do fall and play
while taking a bath!!! So I ask you? who is right? I sure don't want to eat off plates or cook in pots that have
not enough hot water to clean or rinse them plus the silverware!I am in no way a clean freak!!! I don't trust
cooking or eating and using kitchen items not washed and rinsed in luke warm water...
The Sage answers:
220 degrees for dishes and 90 for shower or less. Check with ur health

I help need cleaning our bathtub. It has jets in them?
I use a scouring pads around the narrow surfaces, but it hurts my
fingers.
I called popularhottub company in town. They don’t have
any kind oftools to clean the jets.
I tried a baby bottle cleaner. It’s too big for them.
How do you clean the jets on yourhot-tub or Jacuzzi I tried tilex. Its good but still does not get the mold off. Even after I use
my hose on it.
Used Hot Tubs Store answers:
Buy some lime-away spray. Spray some on the jets. Let it
set a little bit, then wipe off with a wet rag. For the tight areas, spray some on a rag, then do the rag into
the tight areas and work it back out.
This will help you with your hot tub cleaning. There are two chemicals that are generally used
as a sanitizing agent, bromine and chlorine. We are all aware of chlorine used in swimming pools, the smell is
unmistakeable but can irritate sensitive skin and over exposure can hurt the eyes. Bromine on the other hand does
not have such a pungent odour and is more stable than chlorine.

for hot tub cleaning...
Now there's a way you can use bromine as your primary
hot tub cleaning chemical without the ugliness!
Regular hot tub cleaning is needed to prevent harmful diseases
from thriving in it. A few diseases that can thrive on a tub are Folliculitus, Legionnaires Disease,
Cryptosporidiosis and Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis. Folliculitus is more commonly known as a "hot tub rash". It is
contracted by prolonged soaking in water that carries the bacteria which thrives in a poorly maintained
tub.
A regular
rash is what it usually looks like and usually clears up by itself without the need for medications. Legionnaires
Disease is caused by a bacteria and is a kind of pneumonia. Inhaling steam or water vapor from the tub that carries
the bacteria is the cause for this disease. Legionnaires Diseases is a type of disease that attacks the lungs which
is why it can be deadly and a round of anti-biotics is needed to treat it. A parasite found in human and animal
feces is the Cryptosporidiosis.
It is
uncommon but swallowing contaminated tub water can cause this. More commonly known as the "hot tub lung",
Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis is a bacteria that targets the lungs. Like Legionnaires Disease, it is contracted
through inhaling water vapor or steam from contaminated water in the tub. It is the most uncommon disease that you
can contract from a tub, however.
A poorly
maintained portable spa, jacuzzi or hot tub will be more prone to bacteria causing diseases. The only way to ensure
safety from diseases is to maintain regular hot tub cleaning. Make sure to clean or replace the hot tub filter as
necessary because some diseases thrive on the filter because that is where the scum from the tub are
gathered.
Hot tub
cleaning requires the right kind of chemicals. To know what kind of chemicals and its levels are in the tub
water, you should purchase a reliable water sampler. If you are unsure, you can always take a chemical sample to
your local supplies store and have it analyzed. It is important that you have the right chemicals to clean your tub
with otherwise you may create fumes that can be harmful for your health. Draining the water of the hot tub after
every use is a good idea because this will lessen the possibility of any bacteria thriving on the water and staying
on the tub.
Below you will find a specially chosen video designed to show you the
easiest methods for hot tub cleaning.
The hot
tub has been drained out. He unplugs
the hot tub and steps in. His repair tip is to clean it as fast as
possible and leave no dirty water. He leaves some of the old water in the hot tub which he intends to use the
waste water to clean the ring around the hot tub. he uses a scum mitt cleaning glove which gives you a rubber touch
and ecco 1 spray cleaner and scrubs all the way around getting all the grime off including the top, the knobs and
it's non foaming. Much easier to clean from the inside than the outside.
The filter
compartment tends to get the dirtiest so leave the spray on for a minute
and then wipe off. Then using a hose, he allows the waste water to flow out from the tub into his bush. then using
a pump, he drains the remaining water down to about 0.5 of an inch followed by a towel to clear up the final
remnants and voila, it's clean.
