Ideas for Decks and Built in
Entertainment Center!!?
I am looking for a website/books etc. with ideas on how to design decks.
I have the size and place, but would like to see some nice details. The outside corner
will have a hot tub. And, a FREE hot tub, at that. I have tons of back problems and the hot tubs help me so
much. My cousin is giving it to me. I have been blessed by her.
Also, would like to find something to help me design a built in entertainment center.
I have a basic idea, but need some fresh ideas.
The Sage answers:
The best imo is to go to the library, grab a bunch of books and start writing and
drawing. A good carpenter can give you ideas if you know one and most would be happy to share. Good
luck!
Lisa asks…
Mysterious Tube on Laundry Tub?
Long story short, there’s a corner in our basement that’s a bit wrecked – Mushrooms
growing in the corner, wet drywall, etc. We traced the problem to this tiny hose that come off our laundry
tub, which only has hot water running through it either a) after using the faucets, or b) running the washing
machine. The tube, we discovered, is not connected to anything, so it’s just been pissing water all over the
place, behind the wall. It looks like it used to feed into a bigger black pipe, which I think links up with
the dishwasher, but I’m not sure.
Would this be some sort of overflow tube, or a vent tube? Googling hasn’t gotten me
very far… I’m just wondering if we can remove the tube completely and just cap it at the source, or if we can
just run the tube down the drain in the laundry room…
The Sage answers:
Don't cap anything that has water coming OUT of it!
By the description of the hose, it sounds like one of those hoses that either drains the condensation off of the
air conditioner compressor on central AC units, or the, I guess one could call it, the overflow from a whole house
humidifier. The water may be hot because it's running along ductwork. Just a hunch. It shouldn't be dripping all
over the place, it should be draining into the tub, or floor drain. Simply securing the hose is the fix I would
recommend as if it is either of the two things I suggested, you need it, and can't eliminate it.
Donald asks…
Will a tankless water heater work for me?
I just moved into a condo a few months back and was excited to have a bathtub again.
The only problem is that the water heater that we have only fills the tub up with an inch or two of hot water
so baths are pretty much out of the question. The spot where the current water heater is is rather tiny, it's
in the kitchen in the corner under the countertop. I was wondering if a tankless water heater would be a wise
investment? And by wise I really only care if I can get a decent hot bath out of it. Thanks.
The Sage answers:
Tankless water heaters
They're efficient but not necessarily economical
Heating water accounts for up to 30 percent of the average home's energy budget. Some
makers of gas-fired tankless water heaters claim their products can cut your energy costs up to half over
regular storage heaters. So is it time to switch?
Probably not. Gas tankless water heaters, which use high-powered burners to quickly
heat water as it runs through a heat exchanger, were 22 percent more energy efficient on average than the
gas-fired storage-tank models in our tests. That translates into a savings of around $70 to $80 per year,
based on 2008 national energy costs. But because they cost much more than storage water heaters, it can take
up to 22 years to break even—longer than the 20-year life of many models. Moreover, our online poll of 1,200
readers revealed wide variations in installation costs, energy savings, and satisfaction.
With the help of an outside lab, we pitted Takagi and Noritz gas-fired tankless water
heaters against three storage water heaters. We didn't test electric tankless heaters because many can't
deliver hot water fast enough to replace a conventional water heater if groundwater is cold. Even in areas
with warm groundwater, most homeowners would need to upgrade their electrical service to power a whole-house
tankless model.
Our tests simulated daily use of 76 to 78 gallons of hot water. That's the equivalent
of taking three showers, washing one laundry load, running the dishwasher once (six cycles), and turning on
the faucet nine times, for a total of 19 draws. While that's considered heavy use compared with the standard
Department of Energy test, we think it more accurately represents an average family's habits. We also ran
more than 45,000 gallons of very hard water through a tanked model and a Rinnai tankless model to simulate
about 11 years of regular use.
Here's what else we found:
Water runs hot and cold
Manufacturers of tankless water heaters are fond of touting their products' ability to provide an endless amount of
hot water. But inconsistent water temperatures were a common complaint among our poll respondents. When you turn on
the faucet, tankless models feed in some cold water to gauge how big a temperature rise is needed. If there's cool
water lingering in your pipes, you'll receive a momentary "cold-water sandwich" between the old and new hot water.
And a tankless water heater's burner might not ignite when you try to get just a trickle of hot water for, say,
shaving.
Nor do tankless water heaters deliver hot water instantaneously. It takes time to heat
the water to the target temperature, and just like storage water heaters, any cold water in the pipes needs
to be pushed out. And tankless models' electric controls mean you'll also lose hot water during a power
outage.
Up-front costs are high
The tankless water heaters we tested cost $800 to $1,150, compared with $300 to $480 for the regular storage-tank
types. Tankless models need electrical outlets for their fan and electronics, upgraded gas pipes, and a new
ventilation system. That can bring average installation costs to $1,200, compared with $300 for storage-tank
models.
Tankless units might need more care
During our long-term testing, an indicator on the tankless model warned of scale buildup. We paid $334 for special
valves and a plumber to flush out the water heater with vinegar. Many industry pros recommend that tankless models
be serviced once a year by a qualified technician. Calcium buildup can decrease efficiency, restrict water flow,
and damage tankless models. Experts suggest installing a water softener if your water hardness is above 11 grains
per gallon. Ignoring this advice can shorten your warranty.
Efficient storage models are pricey
We also tested the $1,400 Vertex, a high-efficiency storage water heater by A.O. Smith. The manufacturer claims its
installation costs are similar to a regular storage model. But its high cost offsets much of the roughly $70 per
year the Vertex will save you. Instead, we recommend buying a conventional storage water heater with a 9- or
12-year warranty. In previous tests, we found that those models generally had thicker insulation, bigger burners or
larger heating elements, and better corrosion-fighting metal rods called anodes.

Running costs for hot tub?
I was thinking of buying a small 3
personcornerhot
tub for my garden - the one i'm looking at is just
over 500 litre capacity (146 US Gallons) - I wondered if someone could give me a rough idea on running
costs in both terms of chemicals and electricity and anything else?
Used Hot Tubs Store answers:
Well it depends on where you live, what you buy, and
how hot you keep the tub at. As a fyi my friend has a older (10 years) hot tub in New england, it is about
$40.00 a month on electricity, another friend pays $60.00 a month. Just make sure the tub is insulated. No
matter what you do it is a hit on the bill. Chemicals are cheap in comparison. 60.00 will last you months
depending on the usage. When you really look at it, it is a small pool. I you have a pool you already know
what it cost for chemicals. Installation is not bad, I put two in. It is just HEAVY. You would run 220 out
(using the required pipe/tubing) check your code. Then use use stone dust and level. The hardest part is
moving, and digging the trench out to the location.
P.s. Check craigslist they are in there.
Good luck my friend! (it is not bad)

I just bought a used fiberglass hot tub, has small hole (not all the
way through) want to know to repair?
about the size of a quarter, below water line, located in
seatcorner, has bubble above missing fiberglass, very handy
Used Hot Tubs Store answers:
Your used fiberglass tub is actually Acrylic surface I
bet. The fiberglass is underneath the acrylic. You need both kits and of course you need to drain the tub.
The blister is going to filled with a very hot resin so be very careful and do not burn yourself when you
pop it using a very hot needle. The resin bonds the fiberglass to the acrylic. What brand of tub is
it?
Daniel asks…
I have a question about my skirt that goes around my hot tub bunching
up on the bdeck I built around my spa?
I have ahottub
and cover....I had a small deck built around myhottub
....the deck comes flush with thehottub
and sits just under the shell of thehottub
...On the four corners of the deck, I have the deck coming up alittle higher to the top of
thehottub in the four
corners.... The issue is, my skirt on myhottub
is acting wierd....It either bunches up on the deck because there is no room for the skirt on
thehottub to go because the deck
is there, or the skirt just sticks straight out cover part of the deck....then there is issues
about the snaps on thehottub and were i would snap
them in... I guess I could push the deck out all around 3/4" from
thehottub so I can push the skirt
in between the deck andhottub and it should fit ok
like that, but having that 3/4" gap I dont think will look good and I was wanting that flush with
my spa.....Can you cut/trim these skirts to make it fit better? any help would be greatly
appreciated....
Used Hot Tubs Store answers:
Just a thought but could you get some extra snaps and
put them on the deck itself and maybe trim the cover so that it snaps on the the deck where the two come
together? Not sure if this would work since I don't know how your cover is made but if that would work, I
don't think a couple of snaps on the deck would be too noticeable.

somewhere??help okay its electric. i just get freeked out touching things like this.
earlier i noticed a red handle/lever from a pipe leading to thehot water heater, and then there
was a yellow one. The breaker, shut that off?
Used Hot Tubs Store answers:
If the water heater is electric...turn off the
breaker.....if it is gas..then turn the red dial to pilot........then open and close the valve again..maybe
theres just some crud in the seat of the valve........ When ever closing a valve at the heater ALWYS turn
off the electric or gas...... If it is electric and the breakers arent Labled it will be one of the large
ones.....
