The Sage answers: If the tub power was turned on without water in it, it would burn out the heater very quickly. The heater is contained within the stainless steel pipe that is close to the motor. It has a wire that connects to the thermostat. You can purchase a new heater from spaguts.com or other on line spa parts dealers. Not too difficult or expensive.
Jenny asks… Can a hot tub be a cesspool? I was drinking a few nights ago in an in house hot tub with 6 people in total. When we awoke in the morning 5 of us had fevers and body aches. Obviously it cant be hangovers. If one person was sick could it be the hot tub that spread the diseases?
The Sage answers: Hot tubs are conducive to the growth of microorganisms for several reasons; its difficult to maintain a stable free-chlorine level due to higher temperature, a higher concentration of organic material due to larger number of people per volume of water and the aeration from the jets. Folliculitis and pneumonia due to Pseudomonas, Legionella and others bacteria can thrive in this water.

The Sage answers: If I were you tell him what you did and the reason for it. Its normally worst when they find out themselves. Doesn't mean your wrong but its best to be on the same page. You can say it was like a mosh pit.

Is an inch a week too much? My cover doesn't fit tightly - it can't - my spa is down in the deck so no place to attach cover straps. Thank you. The Sage answers: That sounds high to me. An uncovered hot tub wouldn't typically wouldn't loose much more then that. Even if the cover does not seal, the evaporation should condense on the underside of the cover and redeposit in the tub. I think the condensation must be clinging to the cover and dropping off outside the tub rim. Install a strip of adhesive backed weather stripping to the underside of the cover just inside the tub rim. The condensation will run to the strip and drop back into the tub. Some people would not think this is important, but it will help you reduce your "cycles of concentration". The faster you cycle it up, the sooner you need to dump and refill.
Laura asks… How to do a deep clean on a used hot tub? I recently purchased a used hot tub, it looks like the previous owner hasn't used it in a while or taken very good care of it. What should I do for my initial cleaning before using it? Should I fill it up with water, add a gallon of bleach or vinegar and run the jets and blower for half an hour then drain it? The Sage answers: Yep, and along or seperate cleansing some isoprohyl alcohol and maybe some hydrogen peroxide. And to really remove any smells - Dawn with the lime scent.

The Sage answers: I'm a structural engineer, and never understimate the massive weight of water! Plenty of 6" slabs may not be able to support that weight. The only way someone could really tell you is if they knew if the slab was reinforced and to run calculations (by a structural engineer). Now, the other method, which I cannot professionally recommend but is foolproof is to test load with the hot tub full of water and additional weight of occupants (but not with actual people), in a safe manner and be ready for the consequences of failure ;) HTH

The Sage answers: Brands to look at their mid range. Cal Spas(Victory), Dimension 1(@ home), Hotsprings (Tiger river), Sundance (680 series), and Master Spa's (Downeast). These manufactures are the best out there that have been around for on average 30 years. Their dealers should be very good. Most of them above have an entry level, mid range and premium line. Be sure the warranty covers labor and try to get 5 years at least on equipment. Wwwpoolandspacom is a good place to go and compare. (fan of the downeast line)

Warranty, amount of jets/pumps, quality of contruction etc...are all components. Be sure to go with a long time dealer that can provide hundreds of satisfied customers from 3+ years ago. The Sage answers: I see no point leaving the hot tube on during the week because you are losing heat all the time and the thermostat is cutting in and out.there is a calculation but i not think if i tell you that you can understand. Contact your supply authority and they have a customer relations service which will give you the cost. I can tell you it is very expensive toy to have and i would put it on a of peak tariff with your hot water.

water. You can also take in a sample of the water to the local hot tub dealer in your area who will help you
select the exact products you need to balance the water based on the system you are using. I use the Bacqua
spa system and add sanitizer only as needed and that depends on how often we are using the spa. You also need
filters, but our spa manufacturer recommends changing them annually. It would help you to ask the distributor
for their website or a manual for your specific spa and model. They have great information on maintenance,

Example: for an 8 x 8 x .5 foot slab. 8x8=64 If a bag of concrete costs $2.99 then, $2.99 x 32 bags = $95.68 Throw in four 100 lb bags of chipped stone at $6.99 per bag, 4 x $6.99 = $27.96 Wire mesh x 1 roll at $5.99 Note: Thats just an estimate and an example fo how to determine the cost.
